My Illustrations Of Child Beauty Pageants- From Foundation Course NOT DEGREE

At college my class were given an art project to do on something we want to ban. I decided I wanted to ban child beauty pageants despite my strange addiction to the American TV show, 'Toddlers and Tiaras.' In my project I portrayed these young girls as an army of dolls. Each one made in the same way with the same look, same intentions and desires.

This illustration is made from different methods. I've used etching, inks and water colours. This shows the image of a young girl in hair rollers and make up, staring through a gap in the trees. This was inspired by what a child beauty contestant said on the show 'Toddlers and Tiaras.' She said 'I just wanna play outside.'

I couldn't get out of my head how controlling most of the contestant's mothers were. They seemed more obsessed over winning than their children did. To me they were vultures, scavenging on the youth and potential off their kids. This was done in fine liner ink wash.

If you shatter the made up face of a child beauty queen, you'll see the strained hunger in the vulture's eyes stare back at you.

This one is special. It took me four hours and is made of water colours, inks and fine liners. It's the price of beauty for innocence.

I ran out of ideas, so here are some trees.

Pen Sketches

These are a few of my drawings done in a simple biro pen. Some are abstract and others are concept ideas.
